The Bridgerton prequel, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, is almost here and the Ton has its pearls, tiaras, and bouffant gowns at the ready.

In May 2021, Netflix and the TV production company Shondaland announced that a Bridgerton prequel was in the works that would centre on a younger version of British actor Golda Rosheuvel's character, Queen Charlotte.

‘Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I'm thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton,’ Netflix's Head of Global TV, Bela Bajaria, said in a statement when the series was first announced.

According to Netflix, the prequel focusses largely on the life and loves of young Queen Charlotte, as well as those of Violet Bridgerton (played by Ruth Gemmell in Bridgerton) and Lady Agatha Danbury (Adjoa Andoh).

What is the Queen Charlotte release date?

Netflix has just announced the official release date, and it's sooner than we thought. Queen Charlotte will be released on the streaming platform on May 4, 2023. The countdown is on...

What is the Queen Charlotte plot?

We all know that the last thing you want to do in the land of Bridgerton is mess with court heavyweights Queen Elizabeth, Lady Agatha Danbury, and Violet Bridgerton. But what were they like in the early days?

Well, according to a preview during Netflix’s 2022 Tudum event, viewers of the prequel should expect to see Queen Charlotte’s rise to ‘prominence and power’, and enjoy a story about ‘how the young queen’s marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton’.

Who makes up the Queen Charlotte cast?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rosheuvel, Andoh and Gemmell will reprise their roles from the original series, which leads us to think we might be treated to some flash-forwards in the prequel.

Meanwhile, actor India Ria Amarteifio will join the Bridgerton universe to play a Young Queen Charlotte. Netflix’s description of her character reads: ‘With keen knowledge of the once divided social scene and the intricacies of marriage, Agatha becomes a guiding light for the new Queen, all while finding her own voice and power.'

Arsema Thomas will play Lady Agatha Danbury, and in January 2022 Shondaland and Netflix released the first official look at her in character on Instagram.

‘This is the year you find friends who fix your crown. Introducing @arsemathomas as Young Lady Danbury in #QueenCharlotte: A Bridgerton Story. Coming to @netflix in 2023,’ a caption on a photo of Thomas dressed up in character read.

Last March, Netflix also announced new cast members, including Corey Mylchreest as Young King George and Michelle Fairley as Princess Augusta.

The cast also includes Sam Clemmett as Young Brimsley, Richard Cunningham as Lord Bute, Tunji Kasim as Adolphus, Rob Maloney as the Royal Doctor, Cyril Nri as Lord Danbury and Hugh Sachs as Brimsley.

What have the Queen Charlotte cast said about the show?

Adjoa Andoh and Golda Rosheuvel, who play Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte respectively on Bridgerton, have spoken about their experience of working with their 'younger selves' in Queen Charlotte – played by Arsema Thomas and India Amarteifio.

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Andoh said: 'Arsema is just beautiful and I love her. It was so fantastic. We had lovely chats on the phone and we talked about the character and the history – how that person would have been in that world at that time.'

'Arsema asked me stuff about how I felt about Lady Danbury, what I did with the character, how I thought she navigated the world and we sort of worked backwards,' continued Andoh. 'As an actor [it is] a gift and a rare opportunity to talk to someone who’s playing a younger version of you.'

Rosheuvel also opened up about collaborating with India Amarteifio, who plays a young Queen Charlotte. 'Being a veteran actress, I’ve been in positions where I've done a role that somebody else has done,' she said. 'I wanted India to be authentic in her own skin taking on this role. It had to come from her own truth.'

'I echo what Adjoa says – to be able to give that to the next generation, to the next amazing actress coming up in this industry is such a privilege,' continued Rosheuvel. 'So that was first and foremost what I wanted India to do.'
