When Margot Robbie and Diego Calva weren’t snorting Vitamin B powder, engaging in explosive screaming matches, and dancing at the wildest parties we’ve ever seen on screen on the set of their new film Babylon, it's refreshing to hear the actors were tucking into handfuls of Peanut Butter M&M’s.

‘I remember one time I gave it to Bob, our First AD, I was like, “Do you want some Skittles?” And he's like, “Thanks”. And I looked down at my hand, it was covered in sweat and blood and dirt,’ Robbie recalls of snacking on set during a game of Knowing Me, Knowing You with ELLE. ‘And he was like, “thanks so much Margot”. And I was like, “Sorry”.'

The Oscar-nominated actor and Narcos: Mexico lead both star in La La Land director Damien Chazelle’s latest blockbuster Babylon, an original film set in 1920s Los Angeles which also features Brad Pitt, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart. Robbie plays Nellie LaRoy, an aspiring actress, adored by Manny (Calva), an assistant who is desperate to make a name for himself in Hollywood. The film is powerful, frantic, debaucherous and one hell of a three-hour plus ride.

During production, Robbie invited Calva to live with her and her husband, film producer Tom Ackerley, at their house in Los Angeles, resulting in an incomparable chemistry between the actors. ‘I've explained this to you,’ Robbie told Calva when the pair discussed the Australian star’s obsession with the ITV reality dating show, Love Island.

‘How have I described it to you in the past? Just the greatest thing ever. It's just the greatest thing ever. It makes me think a lot,’ Robbie said, before Calva said he must watch it.

‘You really see human behaviour in its purest form,’ Robbie continued. ‘Yes, it's a real meditation on masculinity… I have my all-stars, my favourites like Maura and Liv.’

During the game, the pair correctly guessed that it was Calva who learnt English from Pokémon (‘There wasn't a Spanish version, so if you wanted to play it, you had to learn English’), but were shocked to learn that Tobey Maguire was in the running to play Will Turner in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Elsewhere, the pair discussed their most star-struck moment at recent awards shows. ‘I mean, we just went to the Golden Globes,’ began Robbie, before explaining that she and Calva sat at director Quentin Tarantino’s table, much to the Mexican actor’s glee. As for his favourite moment from the night, Calva said it was Tarantino having a tequila contest with his mother.

As for previous awards shows, Robbie recalled the 2018 Oscars when she was nominated for her first Oscar Best Actress for her film, I, Tonya. ‘For me, there was a moment like five years ago, when I was nominated for I, Tonya, and Frances McDormand won, and she had all the other nominees stand up. She was like, “I want you all to stand up”. And we all stood up and then as soon as it cut to an ad break it was Meryl, Saoirse, Sally, me, we all went together and hugged and held onto each other, and it was, honestly, it was better than winning. It was the most special moment ever.’
